![]() ![]() I think with some more time, it could have been a good class, filling the knight archetype better than the fighter or paladin. For my group, followers were undesirable, but the cavalier couldn't help picking them up at 4th level. Fighting at negative HP, immunities, weapons of choice (even if not as powerful as weapon specialization, but the cavalier had a lot to make up for it). Raising stats each level, which no one else can do short of a wish? (I was pleased to see Hackmaster make this a standard for all classes). ![]() I think it's interesting, and more playable than the barbarian ("I'm playing a barbarian, so we can't have a cleric in the party until I gain the 6001 XP to hit 2nd level, and no one can play a magic-user until I'm 6th level"), but, there's issues. There was a Corrected Cavalier article in Dragon that tried to make the class more playable- and got plenty of hate for weakening the class. ![]() Still, though, I imagine that some folks must have played this class at some point and enjoyed it, and since we've never bothered to try (we very rarely play 1st Edition), I wonder if there's something that we're missing.ĭo you have any stories about cavalier PCs -your own or others' - and how they succeeded as parts of AD&D 1st Edition campaigns? Or, and I'll admit my morbid curiosity, any not-so-great experience with the same? The Forgotten Realms Adventures guidelines for converting campaigns from 1st to 2nd Edition make sure to mention that former cavalier PCs no longer have to keep to those requirements concerning battle. Putting aside the character's special abilities, we joke about it being a class designed to infuriate other players, thanks to its emphasis on charging headlong into battle and continuing it until the field is clear, rather than sizing up the situation, attempting surreptitious or diplomatic solutions, treating discretion as the better part of valor when the party's outmatched, etc. If I'm telling the truth, though, the cavalier class has always been something of a figure of fun between me and another player from back in the day. I love thumbing through classic books, and as a veteran AD&D 2nd Edition player, the 1st Edition Unearthed Arcana is easy enough to understand for me. ![]()
